How tiebreaker rounds work

A tiebreaker question has a specific numeric answer — a year, a count, a measurement. When two or more teams finish a quiz on the same total, the quizmaster reads out one tiebreaker, every tied team writes down a number, and the team closest to the actual answer wins. No further tiebreakers are needed — if two teams give the same number and both are equidistant from the answer, you go to a sudden-death second tiebreaker.

The format is fair because it doesn't reward more specialised knowledge (the way a "name this song" tiebreaker might) — it rewards good estimation, which is a different skill the quiz hasn't tested all night.

What makes a good tiebreaker

  • The answer is genuinely unknown to the audience. "What year was the United Nations founded?" works because most people will be within 5–10 years either way. "How many countries are in Africa?" works because the popular guesses cluster around 50 but the real number is 54.
  • The answer is verifiable. Avoid anything ambiguous ("how many languages are in the world" depends on how you count dialects). Stick to questions with one authoritative source.
  • The answer is bounded. "How many grains of sand on a beach" forces wild guessing. A tiebreaker about a year, a count, or a stadium capacity gives teams enough information to make an educated estimate.
  • The category matches the room. If your quiz has been mostly music, a sports tiebreaker can feel unfair. Stay on theme.

If a tiebreaker still ends in a draw

It's rare but it happens — two teams guess the exact same number, both equidistant from the real answer. The convention is to read out a second tiebreaker, ideally from a different category. Pick a question from the random picker, but with a category filter set to something the room hasn't seen yet. If a sudden-death tiebreaker is also tied, host's call — most experienced hosts share the prize at that point.
